Consistency is key, and this makes the tamping factor a cinch.

There are two main variables when it comes to constant tamping, pressure and angle, both of which can reduce extraction quality if not done right. 

This fancy looking, high tech tamper, controls both variables with its dual spring design.
The ripple base allows the first drops of water to be distributed more evenly across the puck.

The built in springs add a constancy to each tamp by regulating how much force is transferred to the grounds, while keeping the angle at 90 degrees.

The force applied to the coffee grounds by the tamper, creates a dense, tightly packed puck, which slows down the water flow, and increases the pressure. The harder you tamp, the more resistance the coffee applies to the hot water as it tries to pass through the compacted ground coffee.

While people may argue as to what the correct pressure to apply is, no one argues that consistently applying the same pressure to the grinds each time, is one of the essential factors in dialling in a great shot of espresso.

The internal spring absorbs any excessive force applied, taking away much of the natural human variation.
