Because coffee beans have natural oils and fibres, they tend to stick together after they are ground causing clumping. Even after tamping, these clumps are harder for the water to penetrate creating a less even extraction, AND leaving yummy coffee behind.

WDT needle tools work best paired with a spinning distribution tool, which evenly flattens the grounds before tamping.
